To Inhabit Your Column

2016 | Group-exhibition, performance | Kunstpodium T, Tilburg

For this exhibition, each of the five participating artists chose one object. Something simple, a kind of building block to contribute to a shared collection, like putting together a starter kit. The choices might seem random, but each object either held personal meaning or was picked for its ability to add contrast or serve a purpose among the other objects. Once the kit was complete, we each received the same set to use, to mix up, transform, and combine in our own ways.

As part of the exhibition, I created a performance called Retrospective Act, which was performed during the opening. In the performance, I tell a story about five artists working together on a group exhibition. At one point I say: “I watched how we worked, tried to make sense of what we were doing, why we were doing it, and where we were.” The performance became a kind of meta-reflection on our whole collaboration, what it means to exhibit something and how to work together. While I read the text aloud, the other artists were free to interact with the objects from my kit however they liked.
