The Calling of the Precarious Artist

2020-2021 | Research project | Jan van Eyck Academie & Maastricht University

This extensive research project explores the precarious working conditions of contemporary artists in the Netherlands. Focusing on how artists themselves experience their profession, labor, and position, it investigates to what extent their work ethic contributes to their vulnerable position in the labor market. Through eleven in-depth interviews with (former) residents of the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, the project offers insight into the tension between artistic idealism and economic reality. By combining theoretical frameworks, literature review, and field research, this research project provides a nuanced perspective on how systemic structures and individual agency interact within the cultural sector.

“Artists often continue their practice not despite precarious conditions, but because of a deep belief that their work is a calling — a form of labour driven by meaning and love, not money.”

The thesis draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory to examine the mutual influence between artists and the cultural system in which they operate. It critically analyzes how notions of autonomy, authenticity, and symbolic value can inadvertently sustain exploitative working conditions. The interviews reveal not only the challenges artists face, but also the internalized beliefs and values that shape their responses to those challenges.

“Financial reward is frequently subordinated to artistic recognition. In the art world, poverty can perversely be seen as proof of integrity.”

The research has contributed to concrete changes within the Jan van Eyck Academie. Insights from the project have informed adjustments in the academy’s programming and shaped how the institution positions itself within the broader cultural field—emphasizing more sustainable, transparent, and equitable working conditions for artists.

“The precarious position of artists is not merely imposed by the system — it is also sustained by the ideals, values, and behaviours of artists themselves.”
